Some ballets tell fairy tales. Others tell stories of love, revenge, or magic. Theme and Variations does none of these. Created by George Balanchine in 1947, the ballet is a celebration of classical dance itself. Set to the final movement of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Suite No. 3, it features no plot, characters, or dramatic conflict. Instead, the ballet showcases the beauty, precision, and grandeur of classical ballet at its highest level.

Balanchine created Theme and Variations as a tribute to the Imperial Russian ballet tradition in which he had trained as a young dancer. The work evokes the splendor of the great nineteenth-century classics, with elegant costumes, regal formations, and increasingly demanding choreography. The principal ballerina and her partner lead a series of solos, variations, and ensemble dances that grow ever more brilliant as the ballet unfolds. The original leading role was created by the celebrated Cuban ballerina Alicia Alonso, whose performance helped establish the ballet as one of Balanchine's masterpieces.

Although it contains no story, Theme and Variations remains one of the most beloved works in the classical repertoire. Dancers regard it as a major technical challenge, requiring strength, stamina, musicality, and absolute precision. The ballet culminates in a dazzling finale for the entire cast, creating the impression of a grand imperial celebration. More than seventy years after its premiere, Theme and Variations continues to demonstrate why Balanchine is often called one of the most influential choreographers in ballet history.
