Sadko is a fantastical ballet inspired by one of Russia's most beloved medieval legends. Based on the adventures of the legendary musician and merchant Sadko of Novgorod, the ballet tells the story of a gifted gusli player whose music carries him into the magical underwater kingdom of the Sea King. Filled with mythical creatures, enchanted palaces, and shimmering oceans, the story blends Russian folklore with spectacular fantasy.

The ballet draws its music from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's famous opera Sadko, which premiered in 1898 and brought the ancient legend to life with colorful orchestration and unforgettable melodies. One of its most celebrated moments is the Dance of the Sea King and the Underwater Kingdom, where dazzling choreography portrays mermaids, sea maidens, and magical sea creatures dancing beneath the waves. The ballet's vivid underwater scenes have long inspired choreographers, designers, and audiences alike.
Today, Sadko is performed only occasionally in complete ballet productions, but excerpts inspired by its music and legendary underwater scenes continue to appear in galas, concerts, and new choreographic works. Its combination of Russian folklore, breathtaking fantasy, and richly atmospheric music has secured its place as one of the most imaginative stories in the ballet repertoire, inviting audiences into a world where music possesses the power to cross the boundary between the human and magical realms.
