Onegin is a ballet based on Eugene Onegin, a famous novel by Alexander Pushkin. It tells the story of Eugene Onegin, a young man who feels bored and disconnected from life. When Tatiana, a thoughtful young woman, falls in love with him, he rejects her feelings. His choices lead to a series of tragic events, including a duel where he kills his closest friend. Years later, Onegin regrets his actions, but by then Tatiana has moved on with her life.

Tatiana’s emotional solitude remains one of the defining images of Eugene Onegin.

Created by John Cranko and first performed on April 13, 1965, the ballet is known for its dramatic choreography and emotional storytelling. The music was arranged by Kurt-Heinz Stolze using piano pieces and lesser-known works by Tchaikovsky, helping create the ballet’s romantic and melancholic atmosphere.
Cranko first discovered the story while working on the Eugene Onegin opera in 1952. Although his early idea for a ballet adaptation was rejected in London, he later brought the project to life in Stuttgart. Since then, Onegin has been performed by major ballet companies around the world, including American Ballet Theatre, The Royal Ballet, and The Australian Ballet.
