The emotional intensity and elegance of Manon have inspired artists far beyond the ballet stage.

✦ Manon premiered in 1974 at the Royal Opera House in London and was choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan.

✦ The ballet is based on Abbé Prévost's 1731 novel Manon Lescaut, one of the most influential love stories in French literature.

✦ Rather than using Massenet's opera Manon, the ballet's score was arranged by Leighton Lucas from a variety of compositions by Jules Massenet.

✦ The leading roles of Manon and Des Grieux are renowned for their demanding acting and emotionally charged pas de deux.

✦ Considered one of the greatest narrative ballets of the twentieth century, Manon is celebrated for its dramatic storytelling, passionate choreography, and richly romantic music.

Would you risk everything for love, even if you knew it might end in heartbreak? Manon tells the story of a young woman torn between true love and the promise of wealth and luxury. When Manon meets the student Des Grieux, the two fall deeply in love, but her desire for a more glamorous life leads them down a path filled with passion, betrayal, and tragedy.

The ballet is based on Abbé Prévost's 1731 novel Manon Lescaut, a story that has inspired artists for centuries. In 1974, choreographer Kenneth MacMillan transformed the tale into one of the twentieth century's most celebrated dramatic ballets. Rather than commissioning a new score, MacMillan and arranger Leighton Lucas drew upon music by Jules Massenet, weaving together pieces from the French composer's works to create a richly emotional musical landscape.

Today, Manon is regarded as one of the greatest story ballets of the modern era. Its powerful characters, sweeping pas de deux, and deeply expressive choreography challenge dancers both technically and emotionally. Combined with Massenet's romantic music, MacMillan's ballet continues to captivate audiences with a timeless story about love, ambition, and the consequences of the choices we make.
