Legend of Love is a sweeping ballet of love, sacrifice, and destiny based on an ancient Persian legend retold by Turkish writer Nazım Hikmet. Premiering in 1961 at the Kirov Ballet (now the Mariinsky Ballet), the work was choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich with a powerful score by Arif Melikov. The story centers on Queen Mekhmene Banu, who sacrifices her own beauty to save the life of her beloved younger sister, Shirin, setting in motion a heartbreaking tale of love and duty.

Yuri Grigorovich, the celebrated choreographer whose groundbreaking production of Legend of Love transformed twentieth-century dramatic ballet.

Majestic domes and ornate architecture evoke the legendary Persian kingdom where Legend of Love unfolds, a world of royal duty, impossible choices, and enduring love.
As Shirin falls in love with the courageous sculptor Ferkhad, the queen struggles to hide both her disfigurement and her growing feelings for the same man. Torn between love, jealousy, and responsibility, Mekhmene Banu must choose between her own happiness and the promise she made to save her sister. Richly symbolic choreography, dramatic duets, and striking visual designs make Legend of Love one of the most emotionally powerful story ballets of the modern era.
Today, Legend of Love remains one of the signature works of the Russian ballet repertoire, especially at the Mariinsky and Bolshoi theatres. Yuri Grigorovich's groundbreaking choreography combined classical technique with bold modern expression, while Arif Melikov's evocative music gave the ballet its unforgettable emotional depth. Celebrated for its monumental staging and timeless themes of sacrifice, compassion, and unfulfilled love, Legend of Love continues to captivate audiences around the world.
