Checkmate is a one-act ballet created by Ninette de Valois, with music by Arthur Bliss, that turns a game of chess into a dramatic battle between human emotions. Premiered in Paris in 1937, the ballet begins with Love and Death choosing opposing sides of the chessboard. The red pieces represent Love, while the black pieces represent Death, setting up a game in which the movements of the chess pieces become a story about power, attraction, and destruction.

Chess was already being used as a theatrical lens through which human behavior could be represented long before Checkmate.

At the center of the story is the Black Queen, a commanding and dangerous figure who immediately captures the attention of the Red Knight. He becomes fascinated by her, even though they stand on opposite sides of the board. The Black Queen uses his feelings against him, and when the Red Knight finally defeats her in battle, he cannot bring himself to kill the woman he loves. That hesitation gives her the opportunity to strike him down.

With the Red Knight gone, the Black Queen turns her attention to the aging Red King. The Red side is unable to stop her, and the ballet ends with the Black Queen killing the Red King—the final checkmate. Beneath its clever chessboard design, Checkmate is a dark allegory about Love versus Death, showing how weakness, desire, and hesitation can change the outcome of a battle.

Reflection: Can love survive when it is forced to compete against death and fate?
